For the last year or so, Australia has been in and out of lockdowns which have had a significant impact on young gymnast's training regime and mental health. The Gym Spot takes a look at positive affirmations that can help gymnasts maintain a positive mindset especially amidst the conditions across the country where most clubs are closed and gymnasts are training from home.
Affirmations are short bursts of positive quotes that can help maintain a positive outlook on less positive situations. How you see yourself and looking after yourself is important. Focusing on what you can do rather than what you can't do during training helps immensely.
Think of one or two things that you love, write them down on a piece of paper and read them OUT LOUD at least 10 times. The main idea behind this is to give you the confidence to be able to do something - a little pick-me-up on those days where you lack a bit of motivation!
Here are some positive affirmations that you can use on a daily basis.
"I am resilient": This affirmation is ideal for reflecting on times where you feel like you weren't strong enough to carry on, whether it be physically or mentally.
"I can learn new things": This is to remind you of how far you have come and the different challenges that the sport may have faced you with. With the lockdown in place, it is also important to further refine these skills, as well as branch out with other skills and drills so that you can learn new ones.
"I am full of potential": Use this lockdown to push yourself out of your comfort zone! Try skills and drills that you may not have done before, given you have the right protective equipment of course. Do you think you can improve your form on that landing? Could you do another set? Go the extra mile, see how it changes how you feel and pat yourself on the back for trying!
"I am proud of my achievements": Reflect on the times you have gone above and beyond what is expected of you. Think of all the achievements and the skills you have mastered and set a goal of what else you'd like to achieve!
"I am positive." Simple, yet effective. Think of all the tough times you've had when it comes to training, and how you got through those. Now, look at how being optimistic can impact a negative situation.
These are just some affirmations that can help you through your gymnastics journey and everyday life! Repeating affirmations can help you with confidence and motivation, but remember action is key.
