Club Focus: East Gymnastics

Located in Sydney's eastern suburbs, East Gymnastics Edgecliff began in 2012 when Director Natalie Hunter couldn't find a gymnastics club for her child in the area. With a focus on providing high quality recreational gymnastics in a fun and safe environment, she strives to create a space where children of all ages and skill levels can discover the joy of gymnastics.

1. How did your club start?

When my daughter was 7, I wanted to send her to gymnastics but there were no
clubs in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. Having done gymnastics for 11 years as a child, and with a background in marketing and management consulting, I decided to open my own club! So, in 2012, East Gymnastics was born in Bondi Junction. It quickly grew and in 2016 we found fantastic new premises in Edgecliff.

2. How many kids do you train and what skills?

We have around 900 children a week from age 2-18. We have a great Kindergym program for age 2-5, and a Recreation program for age 5+. We also offer Advanced and Development classes for our more advanced gymnasts. We run birthday parties on Sundays and camps in the school holidays.

3. Do you have any special needs programs?

We have quite a lot of children with special needs (such as autism, ADHD, developmental delays) in our classes. We also offer private lessons for children with special needs who need extra one-on-one attention. We run a pro-bono class for adults with special needs about 3 times a year.

4. What’s your club’s vision statement?

Our mission is “To inspire confidence through movement by respecting and
encouraging every individual”.

5. What are some of the objectives of your program?

We aim to develop strong and confident children with a growth mindset who embrace challenges. We cater for children of all ages and abilities and empower them to use their bodies in new ways. We want to encourage as many children as possible to experience the joy of gymnastics. We aim to connect with our gymnasts and parents and form strong and respectful relationships with them.

6. What are you most proud of with your club?

I’m proud of the way we started from nothing, and quickly grew to be a large and successful club that caters to so many children each week. We have a fantastic team of coaches who are passionate about coaching and love children. Many parents report to us how much gymnastics has changed their child’s life –improving their confidence at school, in the playground and with other sports.

7. Why do you think your club is important to families and your
community?

Our club makes gymnastics accessible to every family. We don’t expect children to commit to many hours of training a week, which means they can be all-rounders and do other activities if they choose. We are the only gymnastics school in the Eastern Suburbs with full size equipment and a comprehensive gymnastics program, making our venue attractive and convenient for families who live in the area. Many of our customers have been attending East Gymnastics for many years, making them feel like part of our family.

8. What’s a piece of advice would you give to a gymnast/student?

Keep practicing and have fun!
